These people came in and interviewed us and we talked about the importance of all ages community centers for educating and empowering kids and giving them a safe space to hang out with their friends and they focus on how dangerous our space was. They got great interview material from a 14 year old girl (lost_not_forgot) who books shows at our center, and a community organizer who pours her heart out working to make the lives of girls more empowering and a parent who is totally supportive of our space. They had all this great footage and they spend the whole piece showing my ugly ass summarizing the shutdown. BORING.
The newscrew didn't know we existed before this, they didn't know what we did when they got here, it was clear that the reporter didn't know anything about the internet. They wasted such an opportunity to report about something really INTERESTING but they didn't know what they had because they were just TOO STUPID. So they did the easy story.
Now I'm sure there's a profit driven corporate conspiracy to hire stupid people to report the news so in the end it's all about the profitability of the culture of fear but in the beginning it's all about COMPLETELY CLUELESS news anchors.
Now, more than ever, I'm convinced of the importance of Indymedia. Regular people know more about what is important than the professionals. Karen Moe goes to work at 2pm, spends her whole day making boring stories about mundane topics, and goes home at 11pm. How could she know anything about the world in which we live when she's not living in it?
BUT all ranting aside. They mentioned our capital campaign. That was cool. They were positive about our quest to buy a new building. That was cool. They didn't mention our URL, that sucked.
