11:27 pm - More Heyiya-if Ink

Previous Entry Share Next Entry

Over 7 years ago, I posted a web page with a proposal for a tattoo design that I want to get. I still haven't gotten my act together and commissioned an artist to design this thing. But over the years I've enjoyed a high google rank on searches for "yin-yang tattoo". Just today I received an email that a second documented person out in the big old world has gotten a tattoo inspired by my ideas.

This amuses me.

the color scheme of your design has the sky-earth allusion which i haven't seen before.

the second documented person is moving toward a full flatland view in which the zen circle and the yinyan, and actually all tatoos, would appear as one horizon -- and maybe to be strict about it, would involve no ink at all!

which makes me wonder about the possibility of
a) topological tattoos (moebius, klein, etc)
b) animated tatoos -- some kind of flip-book or succession of images?
c) magritte

I think you've probably seen the triple spiral tattoo I've got, the concept for which is a little related (though not consciously 'til now) to LeGuin's stuff, presumably because she drew (no pun intended) from some of the same sources as I did.

BUT what this makes me think of is watching Seven Samurai -- every time the main guy turned his back, I'd see that perfect symbol on his robe, more than a yin-yang and less than a spiral. I never did pause the film to get a good look at it, and I'm pretty sure it's a common graphic/glyph(?) in Japanese arts ... but anyway, yeah.

I guess there's just something about interconnected spirals. I've never read any LeGuin (I know, shame on me), but my ankle band is a rather similar spiral design (although I think of them as spiral waves). Geometric and nature, all in one package!

interesting...I like the dispersing spirals eminating from that which was once a yinyang. Yinyangs being fire and water, it'd be cool to have something incorporating the other 2 or 3 elements of earth, air, and space. Something like the spiraling out could represent that of wind, and it could center around a hollow globe-like image of some sort...

Anyways...the topic caught my glance, as your userpic looked a bit like my ink (the center blackwork of my user-pic) that some friends and I came up with based on some celtic trist patterns.

I found the page you refer to while looking for good heyiya images to bring to my artist -- ended up bringing one you'd uploaded, actually. There are shockingly few of them around! Anyway, Here's the result.
