craigslist is a free anonymous forum for doing local classified ads of any kind. Got something to give away, post it to craigslist. Got a car you need driven to California for you, post it to craigslist. Want someone to paint your house, post it to craigslist. Want to find people to have an orgy with, post it to craigslist. Want a job, post it to craigslist. Planning an event you want to promote, post it to craigslist. It's kinda like indymedia meets ebay meets monster.com with a simple anonymous free local interface.

All the posts show up on the site with an anonymized email address that people can respond to you with. You can sign up for "subscriptions" so that new postings to some category or other of craigslist get emailed to you.

Right now the chambana one is kinda dead because it is so new and there's a lot of spam. But there is a collaborative spam flagging thing so once enough people start using it and flagging spam the spam will basically go away. In places where craigslist is very popular I know people who say almost everything big they buy and sell and every job they get is from craigslist.

And the whole thing is run by this random guy who thought it'd be a good idea.

Do you know a lot of people who have good luck with finding jobs on Craigslist? In some other online fora I read, it seems like the general trend is that most of the companies posting job openings to Craigslist are cheap and don't really want to pay people what they're worth, particularly for tech jobs. I'm interested to know whether this is really the case.

At the very least, it does appear to be an excellent place to buy/sell/trade things locally.

That may be true of places where craigslist isn't as popular but my understanding is that in the SF area where craigslist is king that EVERYONE advertises jobs on there.

All first hand accounts I've heard have been from people from the SF area.
