Damnit. There were 2 identical comments here from bmajors so I tried to delete one of them and they both disappeared!

The comment was:
When I first heard about the new cameras for Chicago awhile ago I immediately first thought of the Surveillance Camera Players.

ha, I noticed that I accidentally double posted (sorry about that) the comment right away and immediately deleted the second accidental one. Simultaneously, you deleted the first one.

So, that's how it happened. No big deal, although it is sort of funny.

This reminds me of something I saw on one of those "Real Video!" reality/exploitation shows. Over in the UK there are those surveilance cameras everywhere, and this one guy had one pointing across a square and straight into his living room window. He hated the idea of someone watching him constantly, and he hated not having even the smallest amount of privacy, so he had to keep his blinds drawn. But he hated that, too. Well, it just so happens the guy was a special effects makeup artist, specializing in monster costumes. So he put one together of a giant 7-foot alien and went tromping through his neighborhood late one night to see how long it would take for the cops to show up. He just wanted to prove a point as to how intrusive the cameras were, and while I'm not sure the point was made with his alien getup, it was certainly hysterical to watch the surveilance tape and listen to the cops. Heh.

Man, and sometimes you think those Law and Social change professors are exaggerating when they talk about the surveillance society and the connection between "security" and paranoia and the need to invade privacy.

and then it happens.

I'm trying to decide how disturbed I should be about the final statement in the article:
"We're not inside your home or your business," Mayor Daley said. "The city owns the sidewalks. We own the streets and we own the alleys."

I'm not used to politicians talking about the city owning public rights of way. I mean doesn't the public own them rather than the city? I mean did the city ever pay someone for the sidewalks, streets, and alleys?

Isn't "public property" a bit different from "private property" in that not everything goes on public property even if the city wants it to? There are constitutional protections on public property, for instance the city must make public property available for lawful assembly even if a majority of alderpersons vote against it. The city can't kick people off the sidewalks for no basis other than their whim like a property owner can (trespassing). Can the city sell a public road that serves a vital public purpose to a private interest?

A government that considers itself an owner rather than a steward of a commonly held public resource is definitely treading down a dark path. A public that accepts that kind of rhetoric may be in trouble.

Or am I not misinformed about the legal nature of streets and sidewalks?

Mayor Daley has never been accused of overly-careful consideration of his words. However, as a part of the collective known as "the city," (not to be confused with the home of the Tick), I get his point. I would not be too put out if the path from the train station to my home was under surveillance so long as it stopped at my door. With proper safeguards in place, I see this as fulfillment of his obligation to protect our collective home.

Did anyone ever read Margaret Atwood's "The Handmaid's Tale?" Somehow, the current administration keeps reminding me of it. I keep waiting for Ashcroft to have a Prayvaganza.

I do like it but I'm afraid that the cursive "miller" will be hard to read from a passing car and the "Zach" is too small. Would it be possible

Oh also, it needs to be only 2 colors (white can be a third color) because that's all the printer will be able to do).

Also it needs to say in small print somewhere "Paid for by Friends of Zach Miller". And it should say "Vote" somewhere, like "Vote Zach Miller" instead of just "Zach Miller". The "Vote" doesn't have to be a big font.

Also would it be possible for you to get me something in a vector format (PostScript, or the original file from which you created this) for printing purposes?

Sorry for all the nit picky details. Thanks so much for helping with this!
