The Melissa Ferrick show on Wednesday night was Awesome. She broke two strings during one song and never stopped strumming. She just retuned her guitar to a sensible bassy open tuning and played a 10+ minute sex-with-melissa-tutorial version of drive. Sam Shaber who opened was just as excellent as everyone has said she is. I was so happy to see two great east coast folkies playing at a well attended show at a major local venue. I ran into a few WEFTie friends who had never heard Melissa or Sam live before and were totally converted to the way. They're going to help me book shows in the future so maybe I won't be giving it up as I thought I would.

I've been spending a huge amount of volunteer time on the extensive tech requirements of my friend Sarah's art project. For better or worse, it opens tonight. I've had a ton of fun working on a project that combines art, covert and overt direct action, micropower radio, web streaming, and community dialog/public discourse. It's weird not being a student and being burned out by the final push before a finals deadline though. Everyone should come to Krannert Art Museum tonight at 5:30pm for the opening though.

Amy and I have just embarked on watching B5 all the way through.

I've been up to visit my parents a few times in the last month and we visited Amy's parents for Easter. After months of not traveling enough I'm about traveled out for a while again. I seem to have entered a bipolar travel pattern.

I petitioned today. I'm running for County Board with the Green Party. Who wants to help? Tomorrow at 3pm we're meeting at my place.

Upcoming: Artists Against AIDS, IMCfest, working hard on CU Wireless, raising some last bits of cash for the Capital Campaign. And lots of other stuff.

Oh and I'm still a big loser and not reading anyone's livejournal's. I suck. Call me or email me or something if you've announced something cool and I missed it.

WOO-HOO!

ke_jia, boldmoves, spillshercoffee & I just passed the midpoint of Season 3 (and therefore the midpoint of the series).

Have you bought the DVDs? Are you renting? Borrowing tapes? Watching in syndication?

I dig Rentertainment but I hate the short length of time they let you have the movie for (considering the price).

Which Rentertainment have you been going to? I pay $1 per rental (because I bought a 100 movie prepaid renter's block for $100) which last for 3 days and if I want to keep the movie longer I pay another $1 for renewal for an additional 3 days. The store is only 10 minutes away by bike and is open until midnight.

I've never had a problem watching movies in the alloted time and I've never had a problem with paying the late fees when I fail.

boy oh boy are jasunshine and I behind. We are watching _Buffy_ for the first time through, and we're on like Season 2. It's fun though! It'll be cool to do B5 in the near future. :)

I never break strings while playing. Does this mean I'm not ~intense~ enough, or do I just know how to not break them?

Probably not intense enough. :)

You're probably not playing 32nd notes at 160bpm, or whatever she was playing (*pulls numbers out of his ass*), and as intensely. She broke her A string and then her G string, I think.

I almost never break drumsticks while playing, which probably means I don't hit rims very much, for better or worse.

No seriously. There's no way you're playing as intensely as Melissa Ferrick plays. She's insane.

I think acoustic players break strings more often than electric players, too. That might be BS though.

This has been my observation.

No, it's been years. :-\

In retrospect, I was pretty surprised that she didn't have a spare guitar of her own. I imagine she breaks strings pretty frequently.

Yah that surprised me too. Especially since I'd told everyone about her silver guitar and then she didn't have it. I thought when she broke the string "soon I'll be vindicated when she pulls that silver guitar out of that case".

But really, who wouldn't pass up the chance to play Sam's nice Martin?

It seems like they must be traveling light on this tour. Jen wasn't there to do merch/management stuff either. She usually did guitar tech duty, too. Maybe you can't have an extra guitar unless you've got a guitar tech too? Maybe she hocked her extra guitar for startup capital for her record label? Who knows.
