Got any cool leads for awesome artists for us?

I just sent out this letter to a ton of artists and agents. We'll see who bites.

The UC-IMC is Seeking performers for festivals on April 17st, May 1st, and July 4th.

The Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center (UC-IMC, a 501c3 charitable non-profit) is throwing it's second IMCfest fundraiser on April 17th.

We would love it if you (or an artist you represent) could donate a 30-45 minute performance to this festival. If you can please let me know and let me know what sorts of time constraints you will have. In some cases we may be able to pay for gas money, provide a meal, and find sleeping arrangements for out of town artists, so let me know if you are interested in that.

This IMCfest will be all day on Saturday, April 17th at the spacious Canopy Club (capacity is near 1000). There will be two stages with music alternating between them throughout the day (1pm-1am). This will be part of the annual Champaign-Urbana-wide Boneyard Arts Festival.

The festival will feature many diverse styles of music. If you have multiple projects or represent multiple artists please let us know which is/are interested in performing.

We are going to compile a list of interested bands this week and make our booking decisions next week. Because we anticipate more interest than we'll be able to accommodate at the festival we may not be able to book all the bands.

Last August, IMCfest featured 16 bands, 2 feature films, and a zine reading in a 12 hour festival on 2 stages at the Canopy Club. Hundreds of people attended and the IMC raised $1600 towards it's capital campaign and the improvement of our PA system. We also used some of the money raised to sponsor an All Ages music festival which was entirely booked and coordinated by local teens. Our capital campaign now stands at over $60,000 and we are poised to begin shopping for a new permanent home for the IMC at the end of April. Our new building will allow us to once again have our own all ages performance venue.

There is also another IMC fundraiser event happening on May 1st at the University YMCA. This will feature one stage and 5-6 bands in an all ages venue with a capacity of 200. Please let us know if you are available for either April 17th or May 1st. Thanks!

There is also an inkling of a possibility of a July 4th outdoor festival sponsored by the IMC in downtown Urbana. Please let us know if you would be interested in donating a performance to such an event if it comes together.

If you are interested in playing a fundraiser/benefit show for the UC-IMC but are unavailable for any of these dates, please let me know.

Here is information about last August's IMCfest

We are focusing on booking primarily fundraising shows until we have re-established our own venue space. Our venue space will (as it did in the past) book local and nationally touring artists in a non-smoking, all ages, byob, downtown venue space with an excellent sound system. Here is information about our venue getting shut down and our Capital Campaign.

Mission Statement:

The Independent Media Center is a global network of collectively run media outlets for the creation of radical, accurate, and passionate tellings of truth. We are motivated by a love and inspiration for people who work for a better world despite corporate media's distortions and unwillingness to cover efforts to develop an egalitarian and sustainable society.

The Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center is a grassroots organization committed to using media production and distribution as tools for promoting social and economic justice in the Urbana Area. We are dedicated to addressing issues that the mainstream media neglects and we do not conceal our politics behind a false objectivity. We will empower people to "become the media" by providing democratic access to available technologies and information.

Thank you!

There's a great carver I used to work with but she quit. Lemme see if I can get ahold of her and if she'd be interested.

Um, by "artists" in this context, I meant musicians. :)

Doh! There's that subject line again. Once again when I posted, Mozilla automatically inserted an ANCIENT subject line from an old comment in another journal. It's always that line. I need to clear out the form auto-filler-outer-thing again.

In case you were wondering what the hell that subject had to do with my comment. :)

I hadn't even noticed it to be honest...it's a good subject line...just not for this subject

BTW, I'll keep my eyes open for local musicians who might want to play down there.

if you are interested in poetry as well, you should check out the people's poetry theater (or any of its members):

Well we can't do April 17th. May 5th looks like the date now. We don't have confirmation on that yet.

Never assume that because someone told Sascha over beers that a given date was wide open, that the date is in fact open.

great. cinco de mayo party.

and he didn't say it was wide open. he said he didn't know yet, and that the 5th would work better. watch it with the throwing blame around.

something was lost in translation.

probably my own enthusiasm for the date was the culprit.

Yah, the 17th was a thousand times more preferable than the other dates available but we'll do cool things with May 5th.

We're planning on a zapatistas and margaritas theme for cinco de mayo.

i think that 5 may is actually better than the other dates. cinco de mayo is like mardi gras around here. people need an excuse to drink, and so it becomes kind of a "bar holiday." i think people will get schnockered on the margaritas and then will be more likely to give money.

which is of course the top priority. nevermind having fun.

plus having the event on a day like that one will give it an overtone of the political anyway. which i think would be a good thing for all the lush college students to know. that cinco de mayo doesn't just mean "drink with your friends." that there is actually a reason it's not just another day.

also it's my friend jesse's birthday, so he can go and be like, "what a lovely birthday party the IMC is having for me!"

Yah there's definitely going to be a lot of fun to be had. It'll just be a different kind of event than I was hoping for. I was psyched about the daytime possibilities during Boneyard. I was psyched about doing movies and folk from 1pm-8pm and then having lots of rocking fun on both stages after 8. I was psyched about the idea of boneyard people having things to come and go from at Canopy. Maybe a visual art exhibit along with all the music and movies and stuff.

We'll have only 1 movie instead of 2. We'll have less folk. We'll have more drunken frat boys being obnoxious. But everyone will have fun and we'll make money and we'll be subversive. It's all good.

I'm also a bit worried about being right on the heels of the All Ages IMCfest at University YMCA. I'm also a bit worried about the ability of non-students to come out on a Wednesday night. I'm also a bit worried about the fact that I. was so eager to give us the date, has it been hard for him to book that date? Will it be hard for us? We'll see.

well, i was there when sascha talked to him about it, and he wasn't just giving away a shitty date. he said that he'd wanted that day to be something more political (despite the fact that the people who come to his bar are drunk morons, he actually is not, but i'm sure you know that). i have seen a lot of non-students come out on wednesdays before. look at embassy night. there are times when that place is packed to the point where we use all the tables.

5 may is also my last day of classes. the day before, i have to somehow throw together a release party for the shitty magazine i am the editor of at parkland. it will be an exciting week, let me tell you.
