She's either criminally insane or just a showman who has found a "schtick" that gets her a lot of attention, notoriety, press, and income. I usually assume the latter, and therefore pay her no attention whatsoever, figuring that's the best way to combat her hate speech. If people don't pay attention to her, she'll have to find another source of income.

There's always the need to balance between completely ignoring the total whackjobs that no one of consequence listens to anyway and speaking out against the whackjobs that get airplay and that some people seem to believe are credible.

Guys like that neo-nazi asshole who shall remain nameless who spoke at the local library a couple years ago don't get on national TV and radio, don't have best selling books, and can perhaps best be ignored (though I have to say, I was out there to protest his presence in our community...I'm still working out the proper response to neo-nazis when they appear in the community in the flesh to recruit...I'd like to think ignoring them helps but this guy in particular was responsible for inciting several murders).

It is hard for me to believe that anyone takes Ann Coulter any more seriously than a worthless neo-nazi moron, but they do. She's on TV and radio and has books that sell really well. No matter how silent we are, it appears that she won't go away. So I think breaking the silence and exposing her for the hate mongering lunatic that she is is appropriate in this case.

That's what scares me too, that people believe her even though she (or whoever writes her books) MADE UP things.

"I think [women] should be armed but should not [be allowed to] vote."---Politically Incorrect, 2/26/01

****

Women who use this particular kind of "schtick" have always really sickened me. To be a woman in a conservative party and to bring attention to yourself by talking trash about other woman and their abilities has always seemed to me to be a self-loathing and self-destructive strategy. Say this kind of thing long enough and eventually your fellow party members are gonna start to agree with you and come up with a way to shut you up (if you take the argument to the extreme).

That all said, I've gotta agree that the best answer with these demagogues is deafening silence. Although that becomes more problematic the larger their audience becomes.

I have to wonder about the context of some of her Politically Incorrect votes on there. I wonder if she was being sarcastic about her own conservativism. But maybe I under-estimate just how bad she is.

See above for my feelings about the deafening silence thing. It's something that I'm never sure about on a number of levels. I understand the idea and often agree with it. But there are definitely some cases where it is unacceptable and other cases where it is just not useful. I don't know if this is either of those cases or not.

After a glance at her website, I'm not sure what I think. She's had some high-powered legal jobs for a nutcase (clerk for the Eighth Circuit, which is super-prestigious, and the Department of Justice Honors Program), so it's possible she could just be poking fun at liberals to "see em jump." Who knows. But whatever the truth is, it's freaky that she's a #1 New York Times bestselling author.

I don't know why I said "votes" rather than "quotes". Silly finger habits.

i go to bookstores sometimes and read her books. she angers me more than almost anyone in the entire world. i'd buy them and write her letters about everything if it wasn't for that fact that she'd be making money off it. god she's so annoying.

Finally, a feminine version of Jesse Helms! I'm pretty sure that if they mated, their spawn would be the antichrist.
