Have Grievances, Will Travel - The Life and Thoughts of Zach

Previous Entry Share Next Entry

I don't think I do, but do I by any chance have any Internet friends or friends of friends in Miami who can provide housing for 3-6 people on the nights of November 19, 20, and 21 (1 week before thanksgiving).

Also, do I have any Illinois/Wisconsin/Iowa friends who are interested in joining a caravan to Miami.

My affinity group will not be taking any high levels of risk. We will not be actively engaging in specific direct actions (such as attempting to breach the fence), we will instead be going as journalists to witness and document the protest and to provide support services (such as medic and runner services). There are however some risks this year anyway because the Miami police have promised to be as fascist, brutal, and preemptive in their response as possible (which to me is all the more reason that I have to go and peacefully assemble and demonstrate).

Excellent. Home support rocks.

There was some question at the last meeting about whether Zoe was definitely going or not. Glad to hear that she's got transport worked out. Hopefully we'll see you and she at future organizing meetings. Would you like to be added to the Sooper-Sekrit Email List?

surely she and our fam-pal who will be driving would like to be on the a-list; they both attempted to attend the organizing meeting today, but alas, no meeting was found.

Yah, I slept through the meeting and apparently no one else who showed at 2pm up had a key so they left.

The Zoester is already on the a-list, for reference. I am concerned that we have 4 different vehicles going to miami, and only 6? 7? 8? acknowledged attendees. Wasteful!

Well, M. said she'd combine forces with my car if neither of us have a full contingent.

Oh and remember that we need to have empty some space in the cars going down because one less car is coming back up.

Anyone have www.prepaidlegal.com? If you do get arrested, don't drop the soap.

We're working on getting lawyers lined up before we go. We are fully aware of the need for legal support.

Good for you. I'd hate to have my favorite political radicals have a long stay at Hotel Ashcroft.

I assume the National Lawyers Guild will be there as usual.

I've never actually been to an event quite like this one. My only mass actions have been Millions for Mumia in Philly 1999 (a permitted legal march in which there was no police interference at all, about 10,000 present), Reclaim the Streets in Naperville 2001 (a small scale (about 1000 people) event that was completely and immediately supressed by the 300 cops present without any actual tear gas or pepper spray used and only about 20 arrests of key organizers made), and SOA Vigil 2001 (about 15,000 people present for a permitted march which had no police interference, only a few hundred people cross ing over the fence for peaceful non-violent arrests by unarmed military police...all those arrested had a unified jail solidarity plan worked out).

All three of those events had NLG observers and we all had the phone number number for a central source of legal help. At this event because there may be more like 50,000 people and it will be much more decentralized and there will be MUCH more arrests and much more bad behavior by the cops, I don't think any central structure will be able to have observers everywhere or handle all the cases. So all the affinity groups will have their own home base legal support from their communities. We will also be plugging into whatever legal support the organizers in Miami are able to provide but can't count on it being effective.

Or something like that.

Like I said, events of this magnitude are actually pretty new to me and I'm still learning what exactly to expect from the people around me. One member of our affinity group went to the Quebec City FTAA protest in 2001 and I've talked to people who went to the Philly Republican National Convention protests in 2000 (the latter had cops led by the same police chief who now works in Miami, he basically now rents himself out to any city that needs to oppress a massive popular movement). By all accounts this event is going to be even more militarized than even those two were.

"the Miami police have promised to be as fascist, brutal, and preemptive in their response as possible "

Wow, that's amazing! When the police chief was elected/appointed it must've been quite the campaign.

I can see it now... "We promise MORE fascist, brutal, and preemptive behaviour! Oh, and just say NO to, ah, anything, yeah, that's it!"

;) I agree with duck2ducks, don't drop the soap, unless you're into that sort of thing. Have a safe trip.
