Previous Entry Share Next Entry

Trillian and GAIM users, check out the new Jabber-based LJTalk system! It's just like Google Talk (except LJTalk doesn't have a web interface yet) but for LJ! Your mutual friends are all automatically added to your IM buddy list. I'll see ya online!

I was glancing at this earlier today, and saw that they only list Trillian Pro, not Basic. Any idea why?

Ah it looks like Basic doesn't support Jabber.

Ah yes...there it is. Buried at the bottom of the expanded feature chart. *sigh*

I'm quite happy with GAIM on Linux and there is a windows port of it which I imagine must be similarly useful.

Actually, I tried the Windows version of Gaim and had a lot of problems with it. Don't remember all the details, as it's been a while, but I switched to Trillian and vastly preferred it. Mind you, this was specific to the Windows version - I love the *nix version of Gaim.

Huh. I'd heard that complaint from others but they were folks who hadn't used the Unix version. I'd assumed that they were just spoiled by Trillian's extra features. I didn't realize it was because the Windows version was divergent from the Unix version and hence far more lame than Trillian rather than only slightly more lame.

Too bad.

It's So Lame that Trillian makes you pay only for the FREE protocol. Maybe they'll change their tune now that Google and LJ are both using it. Maybe they made that decision back when there were no mainstream Jabber services.

My personal favorite GAIM stupidity is that, for no particular reason, often when I scrollover someone's name, the 'rollover' information that pops up will just stay there when I change to different windows, and it won't go away until I go back to my buddy list and roll over that name again.

In theory, this sounds pretty good.

In practice, I'm not sure I want a buddy list populated with 92 people.

Well:

1) According to the page I linked to above, you can remove LJ people from your buddy list without unfriending them and you can also add LJ people to your buddy list without friending them. So you can prune who you see in Jabber without changing who is your LJ friend.

2) Only the people out of those 92 who are currently logged onto chat (not just logged onto LJ) will show up in your buddy list (unless you have it set to show non-logged in people). I guess later when they have a web interface it would be everyone logged into LJ who is on your buddy list and has opted to use the chat system in their preferences.

3) Right now, I have 124 mutual LJ friends on my default LJ Jabber roster...but when I'm logged into GAIM I only see 1 or 2 of them. I expect that as more people adopt this it might go up to a half a dozen tops. Mostly people who I already have other IM contacts for. But I'm happy for there to be one more way for people to be able to chat with me if they don't already have another chat account.

Ohhhh yeah. The bit where it only shows those who have jumped on board makes it much more manageable. Think will check it out.

Cool. And Since it's just Jabber, I can add it as an account in Adium.
