Serenity Season 2? - The Life and Thoughts of Zach

01:23 pm - Serenity Season 2?

Previous Entry Share Next Entry

I've now researched this enough to feel comfortable posting it with some caveats. There is a very small studio in Hollywood. I mean really small; their main products are a Goonies retrospective, a documentary about DeLorean cars, and a sports website. This studio wants to buy the rights to Firefly from FOX, produce season 2, and sell it. They are looking at distributing it via view-funded download or direct mailed DVD rather than by advertiser-funded TV broadcast.

It's a mad crazy pipedream in the hands of some people who are probably not qualified to make it happen. But it isn't a hoax.

Firefly Season 2's website has a survey. You might think this is just a harvesting engine for spammers and you might be right. But all fields are optional. You can leave the email field blank. You can leave the name field blank. The worst thing that happens is that some spammer learn that a lot of people like Firefly.

There is discussion of this in a lot of places.

Anyway, don't get your hopes up but it can't hurt to fill out the silly little survey. It is not a hoax. It is, apparently, not a scam. It is at worst just lame.

EDIT: Here's Sci Fi Wire's take on it. This basically confirms my suspicions, the guy really exists, really has this plan, but hasn't even talked to Joss about it yet and isn't being taken seriously. Joss is still willing to do more Serenity universe stuff, including possibly a TV show, but isn't actively working on it.

It'd be interesting if someone could go full-hog digital and make a profitable direct-to-iTunes show. But I think this project shouldn't go forward unless Joss Whedon were doing the writing, and he's already said he's moving on to other things.

Unless one of those links I haven't actually read has him hinting otherwise.

It is a myth that Joss has turned away from Firefly. He said in one interview that he was moving on but has since clarified many times that he just meant he had other projects to work on and wasn't himself going to spend a lot of time and energy fighting to make this universe continue. He says he's got all kinds of ideas for further projects and if after the DVD sales pan out someone approaches him with a good offer he will enthusiastically continue the universe.

In the links you are not reading the guy from the studio in question posts saying definitively that the project will not go forward without Joss doing the writing. They are in talks with Joss, FOX, and the original actors. This is why it is such a pipe dream, they have a LOT of hurdles to leap. They're a tiny studio. It isn't outside the realm of possibility though.

Then it sounds like they're going about it the right way. If they end up doing it, I'll willingly plunk down $1.99 an episode.

I think you run into a real problem trying to resurrect the series without two major characters. It just wouldn't be the same and, I believe, quickly lose the steam with which it began. Just my .02

Throughout Buffy and Angel, major characters were killed off, new major characters were created, major characters fundamentally changed their relationship to the other characters (e.g. switching from ultimate evil to fundamental parts of the good guy gang and saving the world). Joss is REALLY GOOD at changing the ensemble around in ways you would THINK would suck but then end up being awesome.

Also, the actor who plays one of those two characters told the crowd at the Indy pre-screening that Joss told him that there was still future for his character. Don't know if that means prequels or flashbacks or resurrection or clones or what but there it is.

Joss wouldn't write it if it was going to suck.

If I remember correctly there was enough of a time lapse between the end of season 1 and the beginning of the movie to fit in a few things...they could potentially pick up where they left off on the small screen.

Technically the comics filled in that time gap... though I guess they could turn the comics into t.v. episodes?

Which is to say that after 13 seasons of television and one major motion picture worth of never being let down, I trust Joss to make another season of good TV even if all he has is a single giant steaming turd to use as the entire cast.

Fascinating Thread, right down to the Chinese Thank you. "Xie Xie." I'd pay to see the new season as well, and I'd love anything Joss does, because he will do it right. If it's not done right, there's no sense in doing it. Wish all things were like that.

Also, if anyone lives in the Chicagoland area, we're doing an allday Firefly fabulous film fest in February (wow that's eff-in effy). All Verse fans are welcome. If anyone's interested, let me know, and I'll send you the details. We're projecting onto the wall for a "big screen" feel. And we're having BBQ for lunch and Chinese for dinner. (Jason Sheperis is coming, for those who know him.)

May the Shiny always be our guide!
