09:44 am - A Ride to the Festival

Previous Entry Share Next Entry

I'm putting together a folk music festival in the UP.

I'm thinking of offering folks from CU who want to go to the festival, a seat on a charter bus that leaves August 25th in the evening, arrives at the festival on August 26th in the morning (with time to set up camp and hike/explore a bit before the music starts), and then returns on August 28th after the festival is over, arriving back in CU early on Monday morning. Also included in the deal would be a free campsite in close walking distance from the festival site (an $15-$20 value), and a weekend pass ticket to the festival (a $50 value).

I am thinking of offering this package for $150 total. If I can sell 30 packages at that price I will break even. I think this is a good deal for everyone because you don't have to drive for 10 hours, you can sleep on the bus. The cost of round trip gas plus tickets plus the campsite would end up being about the same cost anyway if you're driving alone. You get to hang out with lots of cool people who are going to the festival.

Fans of Champaign-Urbana folk music might be interested to note that MJ Walker and Fictive Kin will be playing on the main stage on Sunday!

I can see some folks wanting to come down from Chicago to take this bus.

I need to know that I can probably sell 30 packages before I commit to chartering the bus though. So are you in? If you aren't in but would be in if the parameters were different (if it was leaving from or stopping in Chicago, if it was leaving on a different day, if it was a different price, if I threw in a t-shirt, if I threw in a meal pass, etc), let me know.

Oh and of course, if you've already got tickets I can discount what you paid for the tickets from the package price.

Poll #521973 PorkiesFestival Bus

I would buy that package if you offered it.

I want to make it clear that I will not personally profit from this package deal. If there is a loss I will cover it out of pocket but if there is a surplus it will get rolled back into the festival budget (a 501c3 non-profit) to either offset outstanding expenses from this year or to help fund next year's festival.

It's a great idea. You might want to consider expanding this to spread the word to Indianapolis and St. Louis. They're pretty close (relative to the Porkies) and you'd almost certainly be able to fill a bus then.

That's a good idea. If this bus comes to fruition I will try to get some posters out to those places.

If there's a ground swell of interest, I can always send 2 busses!

By the way, I'm trying to plan out vaca time for the fest...what days do you plan on needing our help?

Thursday will probably be the first of the "crazy days" and Monday will be the main post-fest cleanup day. I plan to be up there the weekend before the fest and for a few more days after the fest.

So ya know...show up Wednesday night or Thursday morning or so and leave on Monday evening or Tuesday morning. Or if you can't get those days off, don't sweat it and come up when you can. We'll definitely very much appreciate all the help we can get. :)

Hmmm...I'm not sure I can do a Thursday morning arrival, but we can definitely be there Thursday during the day. I'm already planning on taking the following week off so staying around for cleanup and R&R for a couple days is also in the plans. I sure wouldn't mind sitting by the lake for a day or two afterwards.

It might be too soon for this, but do you have tentative roles for Eva and I?

During the festival I was kind of hoping you could be my right and left hand people just helping me be in more than one place at a time. We'd be like the swat team, deploying to wherever things were in trouble. :)

But if you want more specific jobs and shorter shifts we can assign you to any number of different areas. Our areas are: flow control/ticket collection (work at the gate collecting tickets and directing cars to their parking spots), security (wander around and make sure folks have wristbands and aren't breaking glass, and keep an eye open for trouble, the county sheriff will deputize you), stage hands (hang out at the stage and be at the beck and call of the sound guy and artists). And of course before and after there is cleanup crew. I've thought about the fact that you've got mad medic skills and those may or may not come in handy, I'm not sure of the details of how we're staffing the first aid area but I think we've got it covered with some local EMT type folks.

Basically give me an idea of how much time you're willing to spend working and what kind of stuff you want to do and what kind of stuff you want to avoid doing.

Yah a bit of vacation to wind down after the thing is over would be nice. I don't think I'd even thought of that. :) Maybe I'll stay longer than I thought.

Your original plan sounds fine for me...I don't want to definitively speak for Eva but I think that'd be good for her too. If my EMT skills (BTW, I'm no longer officially certified in anything) are required, I can just show up as necessary.

Reason for declining: I'm just not local. Good luck with the festival!
