Each alone, they go west or north, towards the mountains. They go on. They leave Omelas, they walk ahead into the darkness, and they do not come back. The place they go towards is a place even less imaginable to most of us than the city of happiness. I cannot describe it at all. It is possible that it does not exist. But they seem to know where they are going, the ones who walk away from Omelas.

That was the story that got me started...

It's still sort of eery to remember, too.

I read it at IMSA in Utopia/Anti-utopia class (which I think I was in at the same time as Zach was). It's the story that convinced me to read more of Ursula LeGuin's writing.

It also started several thought-paths of contemplation on the meaning of happiness and a good society. Not really a conclusion, just a lot of things to consider.

I remember you (I think) reading that at Club Psuedo in high school. That and _The_Last_Question_ by Isaac Asimov. Both of them struck me then and made me think, and have been hanging around in my brain to appear at random times since. I admit the latter had the more solid impact, though, and I spent a few years digging up a copy. (Would have been faster but I had the anthology title wrong).

Wow. And here I thought anyone who read stuff at Pseudo was probably boring the crowd to tears! I'm glad you noticed and remembered!
