Tour with Zarf - The Life and Thoughts of Zach

Besides wanting to travel around the country couch surfing and working, I'd like to spend 2-3 weeks just doing a pure vacation road trip thing in June. Optimally I'm thinking we'd do something like I-90 through the Badlands and Yellowstone to Seattle down to Eugene, down through the redwoods along the coast to San Fransisco, and then end up in Las Vegas for the Science Fiction Research Association's annual convention where Ursula Le Guin will be the guest of honor. Then we'll head back to Champaign-Urbana by way of Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. Sure we'll be burning dead dinosaurs all the way but we'll rent a fuel efficient car and we'll be car pooling and I'll personally make up for it by not owning a car.

Who wants to take 2-3 weeks off and join me?

Poll #423739 Tour with Zarf

3 weeks
3(42.9%)

Besides, the SFRA con in Vegas, where should we go?

Do you have a vehicle we can use for the trip?

3(50.0%)

2(33.3%)

If so, tell me about it. How many does it seat. Is it up to desert and mountain driving?

If I'm around, you're definitely welcome to crash at my place. Lots of couches, wireless, an adorable cat, and in one of the best places, imo, in the city.

Awesome. I suspect that much time will be spent bopping around the bay area, EVERYONE lives there.

Zach, seeing as I am a derelict student, I have no restrictions on my time. Additionally, I should be pretty flush with cash as I have a very pleasant job in Oxford and the strength of the British pound will now be working in my favor, mwahahaha. So you can count me in for pretty much anything. When do you think the plans will start to firm up? I have options here in Europe for Slack and I need to figure out how many of these things I can afford in terms of time and money.

Sweet.

I don't think I'll be able to firm up plans until after I've been working the new job for at least a month and have a REAL feel for how it is going and how long it'll last and how much vacation the job can afford for me to take so early on, etc.

So look to early-mid March for serious planning to begin.

So, it's looking like I have to make a cut off on who comes on this trip. I've got 5 very close friends all coming along and we're going to rent a van. We agreed that trying to keep multiple vehicles worth of people together, find crash space for everybody all at once, and coordinate everyone's desires is going to be tough.

I hate making a big public invitation and then telling folks that we have to leave them out of the plans but sanity is overruling my natural desire to invite and coordinate EVERYONE! :(

Dude, Eva and I have been seriously considering a west coast trip this summer. We were going to start in Eugene(ish) and end up in Diego with a stop by San Fran in the middle. Basically starting with herbivorous, stopping by and seeing Julia and then heading down to hang with the Foss's. Of course, this all depends on the schedules of the peoiple out west...

We have absolutely no timeline or plans of how we're going to get out there, how to get around once we're there or how we are getting back.

We should talk about this more!

I just remembered that I didn't really answer all the questions. For the car, we can fit 5, but more than 4 is really just a mistake...especially with gear. Desert and mountain driving are not a problem as long as we don't do something silly like enter the Pike's Peak challenge. I don't have luggage racks or anything for extra storage, but that could be remedied if needed.

As an added bonus, I can't sleep in cars so I can do as much driving as needed. I can drive alertly up to 20 hours.

Haven't actually thought that far ahead.

Do you know when the reunion is?

According to last Fall's IMSAlum, it's the weekend of June 18th. The website really doesn't have anything yet. Pattys is organizing it...

I don't think I have been to an IMSAlum event of any kind at IMSA since like 1998 or so. I missed our 5-year (but made it to Jake's party).

I will try to work this into the planning!

Oh, a couple of Calgary events I forgot to mention - in June there's the jazz festival (http://www.jazzfestivalcalgary.ca), which is a semi-big deal, and in July there's the Calgary Folk Festival (http://www.calgaryfolkfest.com/) which is friggin huge. Also in July, we have the fun of being the final stop on the North American Solar Car Challenge, so we hope to have lots of Green events to correspond with this. I know July's later than you were aiming, but the Folk Fest looks completely up your alley...

I know Herbivorous and I would put people up.

For those that do not know we recently moved in together. Currently we are in my tiny one bedroom but will be moving in March or April and should have room for people though mostly floor space. We would love to have whoever makes the trip stay with us for a few days, preferrably over a weekend so we did not need to take time off.

We are planning to go back to Chicago for 2 or 3 days in June for her Moms graduation so timing would need to be discussed.

Any interest in a slow drive back home to Oregon rather than a flight back home after your June graduation trip?
