12:38 pm - NYE Planning

Previous Entry Share Next Entry

People are getting itchy for me to plan my multi-day NYE extravaganza. The timing is a little weird this year because NYE is a Friday.

Since NY is a Saturday, what are employers giving as the day off this year? Do people have the next Monday off? Do people have Thursday and Friday off?

Which things do you want to participate in, which days can you make it, any preferences on scheduling?

Here are the things that can be scheduled:
Acoustic Music Night and Community Sing-a-long
Rock and Roll Night (punk mainly)
DJ Dance Night (people like me and Arun DJing, note to arun, I'm not volunteering you, just saying "like", note to Jay and Jason, I'm not leaving you out I just cut and pasted this from an IMSA notesfile where they don't know you)
GamingFest (up to 36 hours)
MovieNight (up to 24 hours)
Sushi Run (a good finale)
Potluck Dinner (a good opener)

Here are the days (the party will NOT use all the days):
Sunday 26th
Monday 27th
Tuesday 28th
Wednesday 29th
Thursday 30th
Friday 31st
Saturday 1st
Sunday 2nd
Monday 3rd

Here are some provisional schedules as examples for critique:

Plan A:
Sunday 26th
Monday 27th Potluck
Tuesday 28th Movies
Wednesday 29th Gaming
Thursday 30th Gaming
Friday 31st DJ Dance Party OR Rock Night (or both)
Saturday 1st Sushi Run
Sunday 2nd Acoustic Music and Sing-a-long
Monday 3rd

Plan B
Sunday 26th
Monday 27th
Tuesday 28th Potluck
Wednesday 29th Gaming
Thursday 30th Acoustic Music Night and Sing-a-long
Friday 31st DJ Dance Party OR Rock Night (or both)
Saturday 1st Movies
Sunday 2nd Sushi Run
Monday 3rd

Plan C
Sunday 26th Potluck
Monday 27th Gaming
Tuesday 28th Gaming
Wednesday 29th Acoustic Music Night and Sing-a-long
Thursday 30th Movies
Friday 31st DJ Dance Party OR Rock Night (or both)
Saturday 1st Sushi Run
Sunday 2nd Chillin'
Monday 3rd

Plan D
Sunday 26th
Monday 27th
Tuesday 28th Potluck
Wednesday 29th Acoustic Music Night and Sing-a-long
Thursday 30th Movies
Friday 31st DJ Dance Party OR Rock Night (or both)
Saturday 1st Gaming
Sunday 2nd Gaming and Sushi
Monday 3rd

When a holiday hits on a Saturday, we get the Friday off.

When a holiday hits on a Sunday, we get the Monday off.

This year, it sucks, because if Xmas or NY hits on a work day, we get the previous day as a half day. Alas. No such luck this time.

Apparently the University here is giving it's employees Monday off for "Day After Christmas" and Friday off for "New Years Observed". And of course, at the University when there's a 3 day work week, so many people take vacation on those three days that everyone else just ditches or "works from home".

Yeah, I'll be pulling the "working from home" thing for about 3 weeks in Dec/Jan.

Of course, "Home" means "my sister's house."

And "work" means "drinking hot cocoa and watching holiday movies on TV while occasionally IMing and LJing."

If you could mention why you like plan D over the others that would be helpful. Which features of it stand out as good things?

I'm in favor of plan a, and my second choice is plan D. Howeverish, I like A better because I have to drive back to el Carbondale on Sunday.
But the goodness is.. no Walmart this Christmas, therefore I can haunt you for the entire party. ^_^

Oops, I meant why you like plan A over the others....but of course you mention why you like it because of the Sunday thing. Doh.

I like plan A because the sing a long is the least likely thing for me to participate in and I could get back to Carbondale without being so deeply disappointed.
I like plan D because gaming and sushi sounds like a great way to end my 10 days away from work. :p

When I started to check out the schedules I misinterpreted "Saturday 1st Sushi Run" and wondered when the second sushi run would be...

All the plans pretty much work for me but if cornered I would pick Plan B. I'll definitely have Friday off and I can probably swing another couple of days, but I'm not sure about Eva. She has less vaca and sick time than I do and I'm not sure how much she's going to have by then.

Lemme know if there's any long distance help you need for this.

No problem. The days I have the greatest likelyhood of being there are Wednesday-Sunday and Plan B has all the stuff I'd want to do. Plan D is also good, but plan B just sounded like a better order to things. Sorry...subjective without any real basis.

it's all good to me, since I'm back in school full time, but I think I'd order the choices as D (1st choice), A, C, B

that plan just has the best feel to it, I guess partly because it puts the gaming on the weekend, when I'd imagine the most people will be able to attend.

Any concerns about the fact that Friday will be the most exhausting night of drunken revelry and people's brains might not be in a proper state for gaming after that?

I had thought of that, hence choice A as my second. But I figure we'll all probably be sleeping in until noon at least, and that leaves plenty of time for (insert favored hangover cure here) before settling in to serious fun.

i am considering sneaking down for a day or two during the week just to hang out. going to need a break from all the family anyway. *grin* i have no real plan preferences, for if i miss The Sushi Run, i will merely obtain my own during the course of the stay. that said, i'd choose plan C or D because my favourite things on that list are the acoustic music and the movies.

I like plan B the best.
I don't know what days off we will be getitng yet. SInce we are normally open on Saturdays they may just close Xmas Day and NYD and those of us who are normally off Saturdays are just SOL. Jenny hopes to know soon what the vacation schedule will be. I'm hopin gwe will get NYE off. If we do my plan is to tak a Vacation day on Thursday and have a long weekend.
I'll have to work Tuesday but will be home for the potluck and Wed I can join in the gaming when I get home and stay up late since I'll be off Thursday.

If we don't get NYE off I'm not sure what I'll do. I hate to burn vacation days for days they should be giving us as paid holidays anyway *grumps*

I like plan D as well for similar reasons.
Anything that starts later in the week I like better. I know I will not have any time between Mon-Thurs off unless I use vacation time, which I'd really rather not do.

I'd have to go for C since I think it's a good idea to lead with the gaming and then have the non-gamers join starting Thursday for the rest. Also, I'm fine with starting Sunday.

From a financial markets perspective, they will not be closing for any days around New Years.

there will definitely be dancing on NYE.

I'll bring a yard sign to your house, but you don't live in my district so people living there won't be able to vote for me. :(

^disclaimer*
haven't read this whole post cause I'm exhausted. but in my world, any plan with a post-NYE component rocks, because my work group is supposed to be super-busy the end of December. ergo I'd hafta party NYE or post NYE most likely.

I'll likely be out-of-state for at least a day or two after Xmas, so I'm game for anything that gets the Sing-along out of the way before I get back. Of course the provisionals all put that at the 29th or later, so what do I know? I would like to get in on the Potluck action (spicy beans for everyone). Also, I would like to bring the rock to the masses. With booze.
