So Edwards made some accusations about Cheney and Halliburton last night. Cheney refered people to the website factcheck.com which he claimed had a lengthy article clearing Halliburton and Cheney of any wrong.

Unfortunately, the website he meant to refer people to is factcheck.ORG.

So the folks who own factcheck.com redirected it to George Soros's website which features the prominent headline "A personal message from George Soros: President Bush is endangering our safety, hurting our vital interests, and undermining American values."

Apparently factcheck.ORG (the real site) is suffering from a Denial of Service attack right now and no one can access it. However, rumors on the street are that factcheck.org's article about Halliburton does not mention anything about what Edwards was charging, so Cheney was lying when he said that factcheck would clear him.

The layers upon layers of misinformation and irony here are too thick. I think I might drown in it.

I only skimmed but I was surprised to not see it on my friends page. That's why I posted about it. I heard it on the notesfiles.

I really wish factcheck.org was accessible right now so I could check on the assertion that their previous article about Haliburton had NOTHING to do with what Edwards was charging. Because that's particularly hilarious.

I read it this morning, early, before the DNS attack. It essentially split the crimes that Halliburton has committed, as listed last night by Edwards, into sections and explained why or why not Cheney was involved.

For example, some of the stuff happened before he was CEO, some after, some during. They also say that Halliburton has paid all of their fines, implying that somehow that absolves them and that we should disregard the crimes that incurred them.

All in all, a typical FactCheck article: non-partisan, but almost to a fault. They skipped his ZILLIONS of stock options that increase in value every time the company gets something like, oh, a no-bid contract to "rebuild" an entire country.

georgesoros.com has a very sweet "We didn't do it, but we're not going to ask them to stop" comment on their site now:

"We do not own the FactCheck.com domain name and are not responsible for it redirecting to GeorgeSoros.com. We are as surprised as anyone by this turn of events. We believe that Vice President Cheney intended to direct viewers of the Vice-Presidential Debate to FactCheck.org."

This website redirection is priceless.

Personally, I'm just in shock over the misrepresentation of the whole Iraq nuclear threat.

First the yellowcake order from Niger is found to be a complete fabrication, and now it's come out that at the time Powell told the Security Council that the aluminum tubes were centrifuge rotors, the government essentially knew it was a damn lie, that:

* The tubes really were meant for conventional rockets; the Iraqis had thousands of rockets that used the same size tube, so their explanation of its use was entirely substantiated.

* While the dimensions of the tubes were similar to a publically available German centrifuge design, such a centrifuge would be too inefficient for a nuclear weapons program. The Iraqis had made some progress on centrifuges before the first Gulf War; with that know-how, they'd have no reason to go back to something as archaic as the German design.

* The tubes were anodized, which is inappropriate for centrifuge rotors but a good idea for military rockets that might be stored outdoors

* Their tolerances were similar to those of comparably sized US rockets.

Dubya started a war using baseless lies. In my view, he deserves to be put on trial for war crimes alongside Hussein.

I agree, but we'll have to wait until a majority of Congress would even be willing to consider it.

Edwards

John Edwards is right outside our building. The speakers are miked so loud
I can hear them with the windows closed, which is good, because the line to get onto the lawn area is about a mile long (literally). The place is crawling with cops, ambulances, etc. In the psych dept here we are all gathered in the offices that overlook the area (no tickets needed for us!).

woo.

I'm gonna go to fencing though.
